Supporting Energy Transition and Decarbonisation in District Heating Sector
Solutions developed
The project will develop solutions that integrate low-grade heat sources into high-temperature district heating (DH) networks to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and biomass. These solutions include technical models for scalable and replicable DH systems, investment plans to meet the revised Energy Efficiency Directive criteria, and strategies for local DH ecosystems. The project will also explore the potential of DH companies to support energy storage and sector integration, providing a comprehensive approach to modernizing and decarbonizing district heating in the targeted regions.
Main results
The project will achieve key results, including the successful integration of low-grade heat sources into high-temperature district heating (DH) networks, significantly reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and biomass. It will produce scalable and replicable DH models, meet the updated Energy Efficiency Directive criteria, and develop investment plans for four DH companies, directly impacting 20 DH systems. Additionally, the project will strengthen local DH ecosystems, enhance energy storage, and contribute to sector integration, laying the groundwork for broader decarbonization in the region.
