100% RE Cities

Name of the HWG: 100% RE Cities

Proposed duration: From 09/2022 to 08/2025

Objectives / goals:

  • Development of support measures for Cities to set up their heating and cooling plans as requested by the Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791, Art. 25.6.
  • Analysis of needs depending on geographical location and other conditions to adapt heating and cooling solutions accordingly.
  • Identification of technology gaps to design and implement 100% RE Cities and potential integration of technology strategy and roadmap to fill these gaps with a specific focus on RE heat generation in heating and cooling plans
  • Development of an overview on 100% RE Cities best practice examples
  • Assessment of existing infrastructure for renewable heating and cooling in cities to build upon those.
  • Evaluation of planning tools to design 100% RE Cities and development of a proposal, to develop missing tools
  • Evaluation of barriers and advantages to use RE sources for electricity and for non-electricity heat generation (solar thermal, geothermal, biomass)
  • Cooperation with other groups focusing on energy transformation towards renewable heating and cooling in cities

Actions / description of methodology

  • Meetings are planned 2-3 times a year, discussing the progress and relevant updates
  • Definitions, tools, guidelines will be developed by scientific partners and reviewed by the entire group
