Breakthrough Water Vapor Driven Turbo-Compression System for Sustainable, Thermal, Advanced Cooling

Solutions developed

Space cooling is a resource- and emissions-intensive process. With demand expected to triple over the next 30 years, a more sustainable method is needed to avert the worst effects of its certain growth. The EIC-funded DEOS project has a solution. Danish R&D firm STAC Technology has developed a low-energy, water-as-refrigerant chiller and ice-slurry generator, capable of delivering megawatt scale cooling output to district scale networks. STAC’s vapour-compression system will lower energy consumption by 40 %, reduce operational risk, eliminate indirect greenhouse gas emissions and produce a novel ice-slurry cooling medium that possesses 7x the cooling capacity of chilled water.

Main results

STAC Technology has designed and developed a breakthrough system that can solve a major sustainability issue surrounding the future of space cooling; how to grow access to this essential need while diminishing its terrible impact on the environment. Our patented water vapor driven turbo-compressor technology powers a potentially near-zero-emission, plug-and-play refrigeration system (DEOS) that produces a pumpable ice slurry with 7x the cooling capacity of existing solutions, delivering 40% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy consumption reduction by 10% compared to NH3 cooling and heating and 62% compared to HFC-cooled AC units.
