Zero-carbon Industrial heat production by aMmonia water aBsorption heAt transformer
Solutions developed
ZIMBA aims to develop an innovative industrial heat pump system based on an Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT) using an ammonia/water refrigerant. The system upgrades low‑grade waste heat into high‑temperature heat, delivering 15 kW (thermal) at 110 °C, with a planned scale‑up to 130 °C. To enhance performance and flexibility, the heat pump system will be optimized with an ejector, allowing for a wider range of operational capacities. This adaptability ensures the technology can meet the diverse heat requirements of various industrial processes, making it a key solution for reducing industrial carbon footprints and contributing to a sustainable energy transition.
Main results
Main results achieved so far include the successful completion of the AHT system design, the development and manufacture of key components such as the ejector and falling-film absorber, the establishment of laboratory test facilities, and the validation of sustainability, market, and business assessments supporting the future deployment of the technology.
