Shaping the future of flexible geothermal energy

Solutions developed

FlexGeo is developing cutting-edge geothermal energy systems to enhance performance and flexibility, aiming for a significant market impact. The project focuses on modular reversible ORC systems with advanced smart controls, targeting increased efficiency and economic viability. A 200 kWel modular ORC unit, featuring these innovations, will be demonstrated at the TUM Campus in Garching, Germany, achieving TRL 7 and paving the way for commercial deployment. FlexGeo also explores high- and low-temperature Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES), advanced closed-loop systems (AGS), and improved district heating and cooling networks, promoting widespread adoption across Europe and beyond, and contributing to major CO2 emission reductions.

Main results

The project's results will tremendously increase the utilization of both shallow and deep geothermal energy and, therefore, contribute to reaching the net-zero greenhouse gas emission goal of the European Union. The pivotal goal of the project is to deliver sustainable solutions for the stabilization and optimization of DHCN systems across Europe and to pave the way for the market entry of commercial modular reversible ORC systems.
