HEATERNAL project proposes a potential remedy by pioneering an innovative thermal energy storage system that can bolster energy density and expedite integration into industrial facilities. Furthermore, it facilitates the incorporation of waste-heat and renewable energy sources. Collaborating with metal and ceramic manufacturers, engineering offices and SMEs, the project aims to deliver swift and substantial profitability, while significantly contributing to carbon emission reduction.
Main results
HEATERNAL brings together 4 research teams, 4 manufacturers, and 3 SMEs to prototype and model an innovative thermal energy storage concept. Combining phase-change materials and 3D-printed unit designs, it aims for a 350% increase in energy density by 2030. Preliminary studies show a rapid ROI and low levelized cost of stored energy, making it 60% cheaper than molten salt storage. Targeting industries like steel and ceramics, HEATERNAL projects sales of €286M by 2040, avoiding 147.5 Mt CO2eq emissions.
