The EU-funded GEOFLEXHEAT project aims to revolutionise the European geothermal energy sector through technologies that enhance the extraction, efficiency, and application of geothermal heat. The project will combine Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger, Scaling Reactor, and High-Temperature Heat Pump to improve heat recovery and deliver cost-effective high-temperature heat for industrial processes. Additionally, it includes a Control Strategy and Digital Twin for system optimisation and real-time management of geothermal plants.

Main results

The GEOFLEXheat project aims to revolutionize Europe’s geothermal sector by enhancing heat extraction, efficiency, and industrial application. A consortium of researchers, SMEs, and industry experts is developing key innovations, including a Heat Pipe Heat Exchanger with a Scaling Reactor for improved heat recovery and mineral byproducts, and a High-Temperature Heat Pump for cost-effective industrial heating. A Digital Twin and advanced Control Strategy will optimize performance. The project also promotes geothermal integration with Carbon Capture and Storage. To ensure impact, GEOFLEXheat will drive commercialization, policy influence, and public engagement, strengthening Europe’s leadership in renewable energy.
